The 10th Annual "Battle of Atlanta
Double Quick" 5K fun run/walk will be on July 19th starting
at 8:30am (check-in begins at 7:30). The starting and finish lines are near where
the actual Battle of Atlanta began in the Historic Kirkwood neighborhood.
The race will begin as the battle began with Union troops firing
the first shot. Union troop re-enactors will be on hand to start
the race on Rogers St. just north of Hosea Williams
Drive near Toomer Elementary School, six blocks away from where
the actual Battle began.
The course starts on Rogers St., turns West on the PATH adjacent to Gilliam Park and proceeds West onto Woodbine Ave,
then East on Hosea Williams Dr., veers left at the Kirkwood sign on Hosea Williams then Southwest on Oakview Rd.,
continuing West as it joins Hosea Williams Dr, turn North on Rogers St., West on the PATH finishing next to Gilliam Park
and the B*ATL Encampment.
The Battle of Atlanta took place on July 22nd,
1864. The 5K DoubleQuick this year on July 19th is part of the
B*ATL Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War
battle.
The race will be neighborhood friendly and suitable
for various ages and skill levels. Volunteers from Kirkwood are
organizing the race which is sponsored by the East Lake Family
YMCA. Entry forms are available online. Registration
before the 17th is $18 ($25 after the 17th and on the day of the race). Runners
will begin gathering in front of Toomer Elementary 7:30 -8:00am.
The DoubleQuick 5K will be the first of a full
line up of activities scheduled for Saturday July 19th. Re-enactment
soldiers will be stationed in re-created trenches near the racecourse in the Kirkwood.
Story telling, a Living History Exhibit and
Guided Van and Walking Tours will also be offered in East Atlanta
along the original front lines.
